Poker Update from Blackhawk, Colorado

With the new $100 maximum bet and the 24/7 operating hours of the casinos, poker has changed in Colorado. To offer a version of hold 'em that feels like no-limit, but conforms to the $100 max bet, casinos are offering small blind hold 'em with a $100 bet at any time. Let's take a tour of the games being offered and see where the action is. Isle of Capri-The biggest hotel and casino (33 floors) in Colorado is still looking for more dealers and other personnel. Thus they have put all tournaments on hold and deal mostly $3-$6 limit hold 'em.

Wanted: Dead or Live

My recent articles dealt with low limit HORSE. Today we are going to look at a concept that has less importance in hold 'em and the hold 'em hands in HORSE and is often overlooked or misunderstood by today's younger players and other new poker players, who play mostly hold 'em.

In 7-card stud, 7 stud/8, and razz, many players do not recognize the importance of the number of cards they need that are already showing on the board, or already folded by their opponents, and therefore unavailable. They want what they want and it does not matter whether those needed cards are dead or live.

A Little More Horsing Around

A few issues ago, I wrote an introductory article about playing low limit HORSE-a rotating game of hold'em, Omaha/8, razz, seven stud, and 7-stud/8 or better. If you are not familiar with how each of these games is played, I suggest that you become knowledgeable with the basics before attempting to play for real money.

That, My Friends, Is Poker

I headed to the Gilpin Casino for their $80 buy-in tourney. There would be 50 players and $1,450 for first. We got down to two tables and I am in second chip position on the big blind with 40,000 chips. The chip leader, in first position, calls. I check. The flop is T-8-6 rainbow. I bet 3,000 with top two pair and was called only by the chip leader, who had about 60,000 in chips. The turn was another ten, which gave me the nuts. Noticing that he looked eager to bet, I checked. He bets 7,000, I raised to 14,000. He went all-in with me beating him in the pot.

My Top Ten Poker Moments, Part 1

The Super bowl has its top ten plays (and games) of all time. N.B.A. basketball has its top ten plays of the month. ESPN Sports Center has its top ten plays of the day.

This got me thinking of my own top-ten poker moments. Making your own list may prove to be fun, and in some cases insightful. So here we go, my list in no particular order:

Good Plays Versus Good Ethics

Tom, a reader from Florida, e-mailed the following question:

Is anything that is legal in poker, all right to do? Or are certain things legal, but unethical or in poor etiquette, and should be avoided?

This got me thinking about some past situations I found myself in. Let's look at a few of them.

1. Anything that is legal is all right to do. Agree or disagree?

2. Playing an online ultra turbo tournament, you take all your time each hand before folding, and play fewer hands than other tables. As a result, your blind comes around more slowly.

Cripple Creek Votes Overwhelmingly To Expand Gambling

The Denver Post and several of my sources in South Central Colorado confirmed that the small gambling town of Cripple Creek, Colorado, voted 267 for and 13 against to expand gambling. The city will allow casinos to stay open 24 hours a day, raise maximum betting limits to $100, and add craps and roulette to slots, poker, and blackjack, beginning July 1, 2009.

Bush-Whacked

According to the Denver Post and other publications, the Bush administration is moving to finalize enforcement of a law that seeks to block internet gambling including poker. The move is drawing hot protests from democratic lawmakers as well as supporters of internet gambling. Of course the president, whose popularity has shrunk to only 30 percent, could care less what the majority of the US population wants.

Colorado Poker, Part 2

Last column's review of Colorado poker covered the Gilpin Poker Room. This issue begins with The Lodge Casino, owned by the same company that owns the Gilpin. The Lodge has no tournaments; only live cash play with $2-$5 blind and $5-$5 blind hold 'em.
