Pennsylvania Court Rules Poker Is a Game of Skill

In the first important legal decision of 2009, a trial judge in Pennsylvania dismissed criminal gambling charges against the operator of a garage poker room and his girlfriend dealer, holding that Texas hold 'em is a game of skill.

Columbia County Judge Thomas A. James, Jr. filed his written Opinion on January 14, 2009. Walter "Buzz" Watkins and Diane A. Dent had been charged with 20 counts of violating Pennsylvania's anti-gambling statutes. Prosecutors alleged they unlawfully solicited and allowed "persons to collect and assemble for the purpose of unlawful gambling."

Bad Beats in Life and Poker

How could I complain about a bad beat when I was in Paradise? Alas, that's what I did on my first morning in the Bahamas. I flew down to the islands to cover the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. After a stroll on the beach, I returned to my room and fired up my laptop for a quick session of online poker. That's when I absorbed another vicious outcome at the virtual tables. Aces cracked. Again. Brutally this time, by a Eurodonk from Finland holding Q-J off-suit.

Bemoaning Bad Luck

I was playing in an online no-limit hold 'em tournament with re-buys when I was dealt Js-Jc in the big blind. It was fairly early in the tournament, and the blinds were $30-$60. I had about $3,300 in my stack. A middle position player raised to $150. Everyone folded to me and I re-raised to $450. He moved all-in and had me covered.

Eugene The Machine Tito Guns His Way to Victory at Commerce Casinos LAPC Opening Event

In a tournament series that began January 22 and is set to run through February 26-more than a month of poker-Glendale, California's Eugene "The Machine" Tito took a $300 buy-in and ran it into a pay day of $124,895. That's a 416 percent return on his investment, which is a pretty nice earn in these recessionary times.

Finishing second, and taking $64,858 back to Santa Ana, CA was Oscar Lopez Reyes, while Sara "Sodapop" Chau, from Dallas, TX, managed a fizzy and carbonated third place finish that was good for $34,745.

Go Big or Go Home

Fred was waiting for me on Friday after I signed up for a few games. He had played in our local poker room's Thursday evening no-limit hold 'em tournament. Fred's wife doesn't like him to drive after dark, but Fred usually bombs out early, so it's rarely a problem.

Fred told me after an hour or so there were still forty players when he picked up pocket kings in early position. The blinds were $200-400 and he had $4,500 in tournament chips. He raised to $800 and three players smoothly called. There was $3,400 in the pot before the dealer flopped: Ah-Ks-9d.

Mike's Opinion on Cheating

I'd been thinking all week about what to write. Then, wham, it came to me while I was observing Mike playing promotionally in the weekly, Wednesday bounty tournament online at Doyle's Room.

Speed For Profit

What is your goal when you hold a pocket pair in limit hold 'em? Hey, that's an easy one... to hit a set... or even quads. But let's not get carried away. We would all be happy to hit a set on the flop with our pocket pair. Hell, we could always make a set into quads on the turn or the river!
