Table Talk

Table talk is an integral part of poker for many players. Jamie Gold famously used it to win over $12 million at the 2006 WSOP Main Event. He blustered about the strength of his hands. He cajoled opponents into making certain plays. He alternately lied and told the truth so often that he had his opponents totally flummoxed and guessing-usually wrongly-about what he had until he was the last man standing.

Raise 'n' Chase, Part 3

We wrote in our previous raisin' 'n' chasin' column that a late position raise would make the pot odds large enough to call another bet on the flop, providing there were four opponents and that we had four or more outs.

We held the 6d-5d in late position and raised before the flop. The flop came as shown below:

Qh-3s-2c

We counted four clean outs. Simple: any one of the four fours on the turn would make our hand a six-high straight.

We pointed out that if the flop came suited then we would have only three outs, as in this flop:

Qh-3s-2s

Canadian Online Payment Processor Indicted by United States

The seizure of US bank accounts in June came as a shock to American online poker players, not to mention the banks and payment processors. Just as fast as the Department of Justice made its move and seized more than $30 million in online gaming funds amidst the transfer process, they fell silent. But that silence ended when one of the payment processors, Account Services, filed suit to have its $13 million returned, and the PPA received permission to file a brief as a friend of the court.

Coaching Yourself

Coaching in most sports comes down to two distinct focuses. One is game-day preparation, where you watch film, run drills, and repeat plays that you hope will help you beat your opponent. Another important part of coaching is inspiring the players. You have to find a way to get them pumped up to play but still in control of their emotions. When the chips are down on game day, you must invigorate them to continue playing hard. When players check the scoreboard and see they are in the lead, the coach's duty is to keep their confidence in check so they continue to fight hard.

Teaching Bad Lessons

The sudden popularity of poker is great for the industry, but bad for beginning poker players. Why?

People from all walks of life have been bitten by the poker bug. They watch their poker favorites on TV and give poker a try. Ah, but there's the catch. You see, skilled professionals are frequently shown playing bad hands and winning with them.

Poker Economics

My dad used to say that during the Great Depression (1929-1939) there were two jobs that you could count on getting. One was being a policeman. He served the force for over forty years and began during the Great Depression. The other job was being a bartender, even during the Prohibition Era (1920-1933). Now we are experiencing what some have called the "Great Recession." Has it had an effect on poker-both on-line and in the brick and mortar casinos?

Will Florida Approve No-Limit Poker?

Hidden in the compact recently signed by Governor Charlie Crist and the Seminole Tribe is a provision giving Florida's licensed cardrooms the right to spread no-limit poker.

Crist felt he had to give these operators something, because he had just agreed to let the tribe have a virtual monopoly on casino gambling for 20 years.

Sometimes the most important part of a legal document are the words that are not there.

The new compact, for example, expressly allows the Tribe to have slot machines and banking card games, like blackjack.
