May 16, 2010 - 3:53amIn 1986, Mike Caro wrote a poker book called Poker for Women, A Course in Destroying Male Opponents at Poker." Today and in my next column I'll talk about some poker women from the past and present and touch on some of Mike's poker tips for women.
Past poker women. The first women of poker hit the scene in the Wild West days. Calamity Jane was one of the first women to sit across the poker table from men and made the queen of spades famous. Today, it's called the "Calamity Jane."

Who first formed the Poker Hall of Fame? Johnny Moss, Benny Binion, Jack Binion, or Amarillo "Slim" Preston?
Answer: Benny Binion, who founded the Horseshoe Casino, formed the Poker Hall of Fame in 1979. He was also responsible for holding the first WSOP event in 1970 at the Horseshoe Casino. It was a by-invitation-only event in which six well-known players were invited.

Gambling History: Denver, CO The First 40 Years were the Wildest
March 6, 2007 - 4:53amAlmost ten years after the fabled California Gold Rush, traces of the precious metal were found at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in 1858, where Cherry Creek meets the South Platte River. It was here that the mining camp that was to become the City of Denver, Colorado was established.
Two more gold discoveries in the mountains near Denver ignited a Rocky Mountain gold rush. The first year, the town had a thousand men and half dozen women.
Deadwood Gold, Gamblers, and Gunslingers
February 28, 2007 - 4:53amDeadwood was created by gold seekers in 1876. It was made notorious by the gamblers and gunslingers that soon came to mine the miners.
The United States ceded the Black Hills in the Dakota Territory to the Lakota Sioux in the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie. It belonged to the Sioux; anyone else was an illegal alien. Six years later, General George Custer, on an expedition through the Black Hills, reported evidence of gold. When the news got out, the rush was on. It wasn't long before a miner found gold in a narrow canyon known as "Deadwood Gulch".
Saratoga Springs, NY America's First Gambling Resort
February 8, 2007 - 4:53amIndicative of its future, the first structure built on the site that was to become Saratoga Springs was a tavern and boarding house in 1773. At the time it was believed the spring water had medicinal properties.
The first bathhouse was built in 1784 and the village of Saratoga Springs continued to grow as a spa resort for the healthy 'n wealthy. It was incorporated in 1827.

January 29, 2007 - 4:53amAfter a decade, the California Gold Rush was on the wane. Miners began looking elsewhere for the next big strike.
In 1859, a small group of gold seekers found some promising ground high in the mountains east of Washoe Valley, Nevada. Placer (surface) miners, they cursed the heavy blueblack sand that clogged their rockers.
