Compelling Stories Abound at the 2010 WSOP

There are any number of interesting, if not compelling stories at this year’s World Series of Poker. The Mizrachi brother’s hot streak continues, as both brothers have each made three final tables.

Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi’s most recent was making the final table of the $10,000 limit hold’em championship.

He started things off with a bang when he won the $50,000 poker players championship for over $1.5 million and followed it up with a sixth place finish in the $10,000 7-card stud world championship. Brother Robert also has three final tables to his credit in 2010.

In addition to the player’s championship—where he was knocked out in fifth to the player’s championship—where he was knocked out in fifth place by his brother— Robert Mizrachi finished eighth in the $5,000 buy-in pot-limit Omaha event, winning $52,471, and eighth again in the $1,500 HORSE event, pocketing $21,525 for his efforts. That’s quite a brother act, and one we’re not likely to see again anytime soon.

Vladimir Schmelev, from St. Petersburg, Russia, has four final table finishes this year. He was fourth in the $2,500 7-card stud event, which was good for $61,795, and seventh in the $10,000 7-stud/8 event, where he won $63,456. The Russian was seventh again in the $10,000 7-card stud championship where he pocketed $55,991, and finished second to Michael Mizrachi in the $50,000 buy-in player’s championship, a finish that netted him a cool $963,375.

Frank Kassela became the first, and so far the only two-time winner at this year’s World Series of Poker when he captured Event No. 40, the $2,500 razz tournament to win $214,085 after earlier winning $447,446 when he won the $10,000 buy-in 7-stud/8 championship event, making him this year’s only double winner.
