Can an optional TIN make a significant difference? A Las Vegas based company believes the surface has barely been scratched and that many professionals leave significant winnings on the table. Marketing : Success has specialized in setting up corporations since 1992 and has experienced a growing referral business within the poker community. The lack of information in this most egregiously taxed profession is understandable due to its solitary nature.

When I asked Jan McNall owner of Marketing : Success if there is the one thing that is easy to do to get started, she mentioned, "setting up a separate tax identification number (TIN). We can do this for them or send them a link and guide them through the process privately. The price is the same. The nice thing about having this set-up proactively is that when lightning strikes a player has an option in addition to their personal SSN when filling out a W-2G. That might be years from now but the optional TIN can make a significant difference." Jan was quick to point out that this should not be misconstrued as tax advice since the triggering event is one that includes a complex matrix of "other income, losses, expenses, and liabilities." McNall suggests you seek competent advice prior to filling out the W-2G if using a separate TIN.

She went on to say, "Our clients are able to consider recognized deductible IRS options including, health care premiums, solo 401K contributions up to $49,000 this year, and some cafeteria plan contributions. Depending on the situation, they may pay less in taxes in the process. And they may be able to do this within a comfortable timeframe and environment while considering life's other factors, including the benefits afforded, family estate planning, and charitable contributions."
