Success in the game of poker can mean both on and off the felt and Kansas resident Brent Christy has defined how to do just that. He is not only a sponsored player but a winning live player, winning online player and professional poker coach. From learning the game with a group of friends playing sit-n-go's to becoming a successful poker professional, Christy's drive has made him a valuable proponent for the poker industry.
"Like most players, I began (playing) with a close group of friend's right after work or on the weekends." He now prefers cash games and heads up tournaments and can be seen playing on Full Tilt or Poker Stars as "itried2warnu" or on the felt at Hard Rock Casino in Tulsa and Harrah's or Ameristar in Kansas City. Christy's most profitable game is online, however, and it served as a platform for his continuing success.
Christy approached the owner of HUSNG.com about his interest in spreading his knowledge of poker by coaching. Because he tracked his results and played well, he had something the owner liked to see. "He brought me on after reviewing my stats and some videos that I had made. (Laughing) I knew right away that I was in good company since all of the other pros were guys that are all regulars I avoided playing." Christy is one of nine pros who make videos of tournaments they play and use voice commentating on each hand or situation. "It's a great way to get into the mind of successful players and understand why they are making a decision or thinking a certain way."
Because he kept pushing himself, Christy was soon speaking with the owner of Shodown Couture, a clothing company created with poker players in mind. "I spoke with the owner about the company and he thought I would be a good fit to represent them." Shodown Couture had two big name pros, Paul Wasicka and Joe Cada representing them when Christy was offered the sponsorship.
Christy has attributed his success to knowledge. He has been a member of the PPA since it was first founded to stay in touch. "I am a big supporter of what they do for the game." He made a donation to PPA in the beginning and has been following its efforts ever since.
Passion is also apparent in his family life. Christy dedicates much of his success to his girlfriend Robin, family and friends. They have never discouraged me from playing," said Christy. "They are awesome! I really couldn't ask for better people to surround myself with." It is important to Christy that he has a life outside of poker.
When asked how poker has changed his life, Christy said, "It has brought me wealth that wouldn't be possible in a lot of other jobs and industries. I have also met so many interesting people and friends through poker, which I am very thankful for. Poker has allowed me the opportunity to work with some amazing teams and companies. The people that are closest to me are so great. I am very fortunate for that."
