[BARCELONA (May 9, 2008) - WPT Enterprises, Inc. and the Peralada Group has announced that the second edition of the World Poker Tour (WPT) event will take place in the Casino of Barcelona from May 21st to 28th. The Casino of Barcelona is proud to host this international event in which the best poker players in the world participate.
"The Spanish Championship of WPT was a great success last year," stated Steve Lipscomb, founder, president, and managing director of the WPT. "It is a great honour for us to extend our alliance with the Peralada Group and come back to Spain with a stage of a regional tour that the Catalans can consider as their own.
More than 400 players will participate in the Spanish Championship of the WPT, among them Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari, who will be the official ambassador of the event and the representative of www.worldpokertour.com at the gambling tables. This professional player will also be the official spokesman of Poker Made Millionaires - a group of 90 elite players who have won at least $1,400,000 in the WPT.
Also, there will be an exhibition tournament for the journalists who want to experience the Spanish Championship WPT directly. During the event Antonio "The Magician" will give master classes to the national journalists and to the foreigners.
The official web of the WPT is organising weekly on-line satellites to give players the opportunity, for only 6 euros, to win their ticket to the main event which cost 5,000 euros plus 300 euros. The Casino of Barcelona will also host two super satellites in Texas Hold´em-no limit for the fee of 200 euros plus 20 euros with recoveries, to begin on May 21st at 5:00 p.m. The main event will start on the 23rd in the Casino of Barcelona with the final on the 27th of May.
During the sixth season of the WPT the tour landed for the first time in Spain in October 2007, with 226 players from all over the world, including players like Gus Hansen, Eric Seidel, Isabelle Mercier, Juha Helppi, Christer Hohansson, and many more. The winner of this tournament was the Austrian Markus Lehmann, who pocketed the prize of 537,000 euros and earned the title of the WPT Spanish Champion, defeating France's Ludovic Lacay. Raúl Mestre was the best Spanish finisher, ending 19th and winning a prize of 10,500 euros. In total, the tournament handed out over 1,695,000 euros in prize money.
The WPT is an international circuit of great poker tournaments, most of which are broadcasted. Thanks to the mass media, the WPT is becoming ever more popular. For the first time the viewers can see the cards of the players during the broadcast, giving them the opportunity to examine each player's style and strategies.
With more than 100 million players all over the world, poker is more popular than golf or tennis. It is estimated that over 15 million of people play poker daily, with over 10.000 in Spain. Because of this, the Casino of Barcelona made the effort to get the best Texas Hold´em poker tournament in Spain for the second consecutive year.
