Superbowl Sunday Brings Super Weekend To Dover Downs

By Barbara Rogers

Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Delaware scored their own touchdown during Super Bowl weekend. I told one of my poker buddies, Jeff Mazza: “watch, the bad beat, it will go this weekend.” Sure enough, it did! It was over one hundred thousand, and it goes often at Dover Downs. This time it is more interesting than most, well worth mentioning. One player had pocket kings, one had pocket aces. The flop brought brought the bad beat with AKK which was quad kings vs. aces full of kings, the minimal qualifier. The aces full hand WAS winning $55K and the quad kings were getting $27K... (drum roll here). The river brought the last ace and the positions were reversed! The quad kings went from the best hand to second best hand.... what a whammy! This cost the pocket aces $27K. I rode the elevator with the guy while he was lamenting what he had won and lost, and he kept reminding himself to be grateful for what he did get.

There was even a $50,000 guarantee NLH tournament held. A chop of $8500 each went to the victors—John Lloyd III from Felton, Delaware, Dudley McClain from Warton, Maryland, Brett Gurowitz of Garthersburg, Maryland, and Gordon McKenzie of Salisbury, Maryland. Although all are fairly local guys, I played with people from all over. The winners wanted to chop the prize pool because they thought the cash action to be juicy and were anxious to get in it!

The cross hairs were on me in the Crown Royal Poker Room as I was the moving target with a $200 bounty on my back. It was fun being me: every twenty minutes I moved to a new table, so everyone had a shot at me. It took two of them to take me down. Normally it only takes one to do it in no time. What a super SuperBowl weekend that Poker room manager Pete McGuire carefully orchestrated for the players.

Pete is running a program called “Cash back Poker Bonus” where players can get up to $200 cash every month. Fifty players already qualified and this will grow as the word spreads. These players know how to “mix it up.” You will have lots of fun playing here and Dover Downs Casino Resort is beautiful. It is a classy place, with classy men like Pete, and Director Of Table Games, Bob “Westy” Westerfield taking care of business. Westy, by the way, knows his football and the Jets like none other. If they want a serious run to next years SuperBowl, the Jets front office should ask Westy if they can tap into his proposed plan for them.
