World Series of Poker Day 3 Recap

On the official third day of action, the players reached the money at the 2005 World Series of Poker. 569 players began on Monday after surviving a field of over 5619 players. The top 560 players are paid prize money. The action started out slow because the players were on "The Bubble," which meant that they were close to making it into the money. All of the short stacks were playing tight and cautious. They didn't want to make any crucial mistakes so close to the money. As soon as the first nine players were eliminated, the players began falling fast. By the end of the day, the field had dwindled down to 188 players. Greg "Fossilman" Raymer closed out day #3 as the chip leader with over a million in play money. When he took the chip lead on day #4 of the 2004 main event he never relinquished his lead and went on to become the WSOP Champion.

The Buzz

Greg "Fossilman" Raymer continued his bid to be the first repeat WSOP champions since Johnny Chan's magnificent run in 1987-1988. If Raymer repeats this year it will be one of the most amazing feat in poker history. The fact that he outlasted over 5,400 players is outstanding. After starting Day 2 with over $300K, Raymer ended Day 3 with over $1 million in chips.

The Back Story

It's never fun to be the "bubble-boy," which is designated to the person who misses the money by one spot. Karl Ygborn came in 561st place. This year Harrah's chose to free roll Karl Ygborn into the 2006 World Series of Poker.

Sight of the Day

Just after Midnight, Mike Matusow and Greg Raymer was seated at the same table. Fireworks occurred last year when Matusow relentlessly verbally abused Raymer while the two were at the same table. Raymer got his revenge after he eliminated Matusow.

Quote of the Day

"Out of five hundred and sixty players, at least five hundred of them figured they had no chance. And now, they're in the money. For five hundred players, their dreams have been made," said Nolan Dalla the WSOP Media Director.
