Priorities First

From an infant to the eldest adult, we collectively experience decisions that reflect our level of both understanding and experience. Even the lowliest of decisions - as in selecting to either skip or partake in breakfast - require some pondering to decide. Should I have cereal - (cold cereal, or hot cereal) - eggs and bacon, toast and jelly, pancakes... yes, pancakes; or do I want French toast or waffles?

Whew! Next thing you know you just stop at McDonald's or something. You see to take on too many decisions early in the morning set the table for a long day of frustration. If the process of making decisions causes stress to go up, the level of decision- making goes down.

In order to avoid having to deal with the consequences, we usually will opt for the most simplistic answer.

Never-mind that there may have been a more viable answer if we delve into the thought-provoking vault where secrets to gigantic things are kept.

When it comes to making decisions about poker - and in life's biggest decisions, we need to prioritize our choices. If, - in the short run - a decision to play in a game that is too big for your bankroll, will negatively affect your opportunities for the long run with a depleted bankroll, if you do not win, think again. I have set in games where my judgment and decision making was handicapped because of short-money. Similarly, I have made decisions to not call or raise or whatever, because as soon as the "blind" comes around I was about to quit. Not because I did not think I could win, no, it is because I needed to go to the store or pay a bill, or make a down payment with that particular money. Here is one of my stories:

One day a lady friend of mine called and asked if I could come by the job.

Well, I wasn't doing much of anything at the time, so I agreed. We did not usually have an amorous relationship, but I was still kind of hoping she wanted something GOOD! When I arrived to find her in the best of moods I sensed an opportunity was on the horizon. Sure enough, it was exactly what I was hoping for, but wouldn't you know it, I didn't have a dime of American currency!

I didn't have a place to take her either so, I was going to miss the "river card of life". No way, she moaned in my ear, "Get some money from somewhere". Before you could say boo, I had secured a $50 loan from Uncle "X", and away we go. I drove to a casino that had both a hotel and card room. However, the card room manager informed me that I needed to play, in order to secure the room for the whole $50 bucks.

While she waited in the car, I proceeded to play. Knowing that I could not afford to lose even one dollar of the money, I played behind the button without a post. Since my priorities were straight as an arrow - Remember she's waiting out in the car! - I had planned to throw away everything, no matter what. Wouldn't you know it; my first hand was pocket queens, no hesitation into the soup!

Somebody would have made two pair. The next couple of hands were winning hands - such as queen-jack suited, and pocket tens. No matter, too late now and the blinds were almost upon me. At that point, I took an out button. Finally, I received my just due for having the card sense to keep my priorities straight (Ace-ten)!
