James Vogl of London, England bested a field of 834 entrants to win $400,000 from the record prize pool of $1,534,560. Sean Rice (photo below) of Lubbock, Texas finished second and collected $213,000 after about a half hour of heads-up play at the final table. The two went after the coveted WSOP bracelet and first place money after third place finisher David Chui was eliminated by Rice's pocket fours. The heads-up play began with Rice holding about $1.2 million to Vogl's $685K in chips. The turning point came when Vogl went all-in with pocket sevens and Rice called with pocket fours. The flop came 7-8-ten rainbow giving Vogl a set of Sevens and no help for Rice. The turn paired the board with an eight giving Vogl a full house. A nine came on the river for a board straight. Vogl doubled up and took the chip lead with approximately $1.25 million to Rice's $600K. A few hands later Rice went all in with a K-Q off suit and was called by Vogl with a Big Slick, A-K off suit. The flop came 9-8-4 with two spades. The turn brought the 8 of spades giving Vogl a flush draw with his King of spades. The river showed a Ten of spades giving Vogl the spade flush and win. Neither player has a previous win at the WSOP. The winner, James Vogl, got his seat after winning a $125.00 satellite. |
